This is my understanding... I read an interview in Linux Mag (I think) regarding Sun's open-source initiative (specifically Solaris). Sun claims that one of the problems with opening up all the code is that they didn't write all of it. There are portions of code that are closed and they have to get permission from the author to release it in an open source package, and some code is so badly documented they have a team of people investigating to find out who exactly contributed it based on stylistic properties in the code. That is likely the reason we're waiting on a true open-source Java. However, they need to get off of their @$$es and compile Java 5 for SPARC/Linux. I suspect they are holding out on that to force people with SPARC hardware wanting to use Java to use Solaris instead of their distro of choice. ashley wilson | network administrator | smart furniture 430 market street | chattanooga tn | 37402 [email protected] | 423 267 7270x1402 www.smartfurniture.com | design on demand -----Original Message----- From: Scot P. I wish I understood why (probably because I didn't read all the instructions through) one needs a bootstrap JDK???? It seems overly complicated to build the silly thing for sure.
