I've had this happen, too. My solution was to keep the /home directory
local, and use nfs on something like /usr/local/???? and the use
symbolic links from the /home/[user]/shared_directory so the bulk of
the stuff is still on the nfs, but individual's stuff is kept local.

When
I was using my PIII 550 Mhz as the NFS server I didn't encounter
any of these performance issues... I don't want to "falsely" accuse my
U5 - but my experience shows me it must be the U5...

I have seen this same issue, using PII 350 and PIII 500 and even P4
2.2, so I'd have trouble blaming the U5. Although I am a great fan of
Firefox and Thunderbird, I am more inclined to blame them because
despite many changes to the environment, I continue to match your
results. I *think* it must be something in how they load user
environments, as if those files are non-flat, fragmented files, and
Firefox reads one part, then another, then one back near the beginning,
then near the end, then the middle, and maybe that is driving nfsd
nutty?

Just a guess, nowhere near a definative answer, and I'd love to hear
others' comments.
