I think this is the point at which I wave in a friendly manner at the GAR developers, since I've spent the last year or so building and actively maintaining a desktop Linux system based on a modified version of GAR. In general, it works beautifully; GAR's a really nice ports system for this sort of thing. There's some information and a snapshot of my ports tree available at <http://offog.org/code/garstow.html>. The version of GAR I used has diverged somewhat from the original; some of my patches (to cope with new archive formats, checking archive PGP signatures, and so on) might be of interest to upstream GAR, whereas stow support probably isn't.
