Customizing the BBC

In the past couple of weeks, there have been a few messages asking how
to generate a customized version of the BBC without having to download
and build the whole BBC from the source files.  Generally, the type of
customizations desired have been quite minor -- one fellow wanted to
put his company's name on the startup screen; another wanted the BBC
to try using dcmp to set up networking during init time; I would like
to decolorize the shell prompt and ls output.

These are all changes that could be made by modifying a few lines in
one of the files in /etc, if only there were some way to generate a
new singularity file from the a modified version of the running
system, or if the system startup were modified to allow files in /etc
to be replaced by files stored outside of the singularity.

I just wanted to see if there's already some way to do this before I
filed a wishlist request in bugzilla.
