Odds are that your CD is just fine.  I've seen these same error
messages when using DMA transfers on a motherboard that doesn't
support this under Linux.  In my case this involved a motherboard
based on a Via chipset.  Disabling DMA cured the problem for me.  I've
also heard reports of this occuring if the hard drive cable is too
long or damaged.
