md5 is a way to verify the validity of a file. It uses a cryptographic 
algorithm to generate a unique number for a file. If the file has 
changed from tampering or if it is corrupted, the md5sum or checksum 
will change. It is smart to check all of your downloads if the publisher 
makes the information available.

If you are running windows you might want to try this: 
http://www.fastsum.com/

It should already be installed on a Linux system as md5sum.
