The e1000 module is available to the LNX-BBC as an optional build-time
module. It's not in the standard image mainly because it wasn't part of
the standard kernel. The module is part of the latest kernel, and is in
all of the latest HEAD builds (although I haven't seen any drop in Nate's
repository lately and they've probably all rotated out).

I'm not a policy maker, so I'll defer the discussion on 2.6 pro's and
con's to lnx-bbc-devel.
