Hi,

Im not sure if I can help too much with your problem as I dont use
rpm's or fedora...

But, usually a

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

would occur because of 2 reasons...

1: Drivers either compiled into the kernel or available at boot time
via an initrd image are not available when needed.

2: your kernel root option in your bootloader is wrong.

Im guessing that its proberly the root option unless you have some
very recent unsupported drive or an obscure ancient disk drive.

I am also unsure on fedora core 5's usage of /dev as 2.6 kernels
usually use udev while 2.4 kernels tend to use devfsd

As i said above for rpm's, I dont use them but chances are your root
option on your kernel command line (or realroot or whatever they use)
is written as udev would accept and not devfs (i also assume that
devfs is compiled into the 2.4 kernel - but dunno)

try changing /dev/hda[x] to read /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part[x]
(usually this or something similar for your primary ide drive)

As for compiling your own kernel from source, I have sucess using gcc
3.4.6 (i think - as its been a while since I last compiled a 2.4
kernel)

I hope some of this helps

Martin

PS: Hello to the rest of the oM userlist... its been a while since my
last ramblings, not had time recently to mess around with anything oM
as my partner and myself are awaiting our first offsping :)
