After a day of Googling, experimenting and puzzling I discovered the 
source of the problem.  It turns out to have nothing to do with 
openMosix, it's a BIOS bug.  The values in the processor's MTRRs were 
wrong, causing the last 32MB of RAM (of 2048MB total) to be much slower. 
  I solved this by hand-hacking /proc/mtrr.
