Maybe it is of interest, we are using SuSE 9.0 with openmosix without problems (openmosix/linux vanilla 2.4.22, because we never bothered to update the running system). I would rather compile any filesystem driver into the kernel and not as module. This way you do not need an initrd (I even disable ram disk support) minimising sources of problems.
