Oops, they will extract, they just wont list:

$ tar ztvf xjobs-20060410.tgz
drwx------ maierkom/maierkom 0 2006-04-10 10:26:55 xjobs-20060410/
tar: Skipping to next header
-rw------- maierkom/maierkom 18008 2006-04-10 09:14:12
xjobs-20060410/COPYING
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

  Ouch. Yet:

$ tar zxvf xjobs-20060410.tgz
xjobs-20060410/
xjobs-20060410/tokenizer.l
xjobs-20060410/COPYING
xjobs-20060410/tokens.h
xjobs-20060410/log.c
xjobs-20060410/log.h
xjobs-20060410/xjobs.1
xjobs-20060410/README
xjobs-20060410/Makefile
xjobs-20060410/xjobs.c
