Problem with gdm login and keyboard

All,

I just installed openssi 1.2 on Debian sarge 3.1 and created a two node cluster. Everything seems to work ok, no errors while installing the base system.  I downloaded x-windows, gnome, and gdm packages from a debian mirror and installed them on the initnode. X-Windows/gnome/gdm  works fine on the initnode. I then followed the instructions in the README.X-windows file to set up x-windows for the other node (node2).

I did get an error when I executed the command 'mkglobalfile /tmp/.font-unix'  when trying to create the CDSLs. The error indicated that it could not find ".font-unix  in the /cluster/nodetemplate".... which was true when I checked...   

I continued....with the README...and eventually I think I got the symlinks to look right.

I entered a 'gdm' line  in the rc.nodeinfo file using the  'ALL' keyword and rebooted node 2.

when the node booted up I was glad to see that the gdm login came up. I was not so glad to notice that although the mouse worked, the keyboard did not...the cursor did blink quite normally but the keyboard was having a fit with Caps lock and Num lock light blinking wildly...

I also noticed that the log file in /cluster/node2/var/log/gdm showed the following message at the end..

'Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!'

Please note that when I do not put gdm in the rc.nodeinfo file and I invoke xwindows from the command line on node 2 using 'startx' then xwindows comes up and everything works fine.

Anyone have a suggestion?
