Normally there should be nothing special to do.  To get into the state
you're in there needs to have been some problem earlier in the
installation process.

I saw similar problems myself when I used "aptitude" instead of
"apt-get" to do the "dist-upgrade" and "install openssi" steps, aptitude
doesn't do some of the downgrades necessary for OpenSSI.  (OpenSSI 1.9 
for Debian was done before Sarge final came out, so some of the OpenSSI
1.9 packages are slightly older than the Sarge versions).

Could you do a:

    dpkg -l | grep ssi

and show us the output.
