I went and looked into every sub directory for apt (on the theory that one of 
the subs would have apt in it for updating your apt install). Alas, no joy.

(suser-rbos had the apt stuff on all earlier versions)

and there was apt, lua and the libs.. but no synaptic. For suse 9.0 and not 
9.1 but at least it is for the 64 bit version.  Download apt, apt-libs and 
lua and copy the directory apt under /usr/lib64/apt into /usr/lib/apt and 
this can get apt installed so that it will work.

Not bad but not happy happy yet since I have grown very fond of synaptic.  Try 
moving libs around so that synaptic can find them but thus far no joy.  
Example:  synaptic wants libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5.so.0 and I find the files 
in /usr/lib64.  Copying those files into /usr/lib does NOT enable synaptic to 
find them.  

So that is where I am at the moment.  I got apt working and am messing around 
trying to get synaptic working.
