I guess I'm just joining in and I'm not sure of all of the history involved
in your situation, but if your intention is to find a replacement for
apt-get, I you'll find going to yum a more direct (almost-drop-in)
replacement. That's what we did for our BU Linux distribution, and we've
been really happy (especially now with the sqlite backend).

Not dissing smartpm, which is cool and all. And it can certainly coexist
with yum. It's just a very different approach, and one which really focuses
on the problems related to mixing repositories.
