Nowadays standard is to use git-buildpackage https://wiki.debian.org/PackagingWithGit gbp import-orig will update branches and create tags. Also flightgear is not in the games team at the moment, but it probably should. I am not sure what the process for that, probably involves contacting original maintainers.
