Screen autorotation works in gdm but doesn't work in gnome

Hi!

I have an ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP401CA notebook with following relevant
debian packages installed:

- linux-image-4.18.0-1-amd64 4.18.8-1
- gnome-shell 3.30.0-2
- gdm3 3.30.0-1
- xwayland 2:1.20.1-3
- iio-sensor-proxy 2.4-2

The notebook is designed to work with the screen rotated at any angle
and gdm supports this feature well: when the screen is rotated more than
180 degrees the screen image flips over. But after logging in when gnome
shell takes control over the screen auto-rotation will stop working and
the screen image won't respond to rotations.

Does anybody know how to fix/debug this issue?
