I replied to Chris about this off-list. 

I look forward to seeing what comes of his work. GNUe can certainly use
some help, I did review them earlier. Calendula is long overdue, so I
decided not to go the GNUe route until there is more work done on
documenting and stabilizing its infrastructure (not something I can
spare cycles for).

So from the responses to my original post it looks like there is some
activity percolating out there....
