Any success with real hardware?

Today I did try over and over to get the img file stuff to run
  on an old motherboard :

Neither a SATA SSD nor an old old Seagate 512Kb byte sector disk
would work. I see GRUB just fine and then some boot messages begin and
then bad stuff regarding a disk. Will the current img file only work on
very specific Intel hardware from a given era?

Also I am able to boot and run inside QEMU but that is not the point
here at all. I suspect that there must be some hardware somewhere that
will provide an ethernet port and a disk and VGA and maybe even a serial
console. I would love to hear from anyone that has that sort of stuff
working.
