I agree and I wish I could help, but my programming skills are negligible.

I have an idea, though.

I think that maybe one of the things that has hindered Gobo is that
once it is installed and working, it looks just like any other Linux.
There is nothing to distinguish it visually - it is just another KDE
distro. (And KDE is not that popular any more, not since KDE 4.)

I think a revamp with a different default desktop, one that nobody
else uses, would give Gobo more of an identity and make it stand out.

My suggestions would be the ROX Desktop, because:
[1] I like it :¬)
[2] No other distro is based on ROX-Session (although a few use
ROX-Filer, the file manager, on its own)
[3] But mostly, because ROX natively understands and uses the
directory-as-a-whole-application concept.

The alternative is Window Maker and GNUstep, as it too uses "app
bundles" - directories that are applications. I am investigating
building an Ubuntu remix based on GNUstep at the moment, as all the
packages are already in the repositories - it just needs integrating.
There are some bugs and issues, though.

But I have seen some minority distros get extra attention because they
look different - e.g. Bodhi Linux (Enlightenment), Elementary OS
(their own, using original code and some GNOME components), ZevenOS
(Xfce but extensively reworked to make it look just like BeOS),
Crunchbang (Openbox+tint2+Conky+customisations) etc.
