Fedora, pretty much the world's #2 distro and I think the leader in
North America, is based on GNOME 3.

OpenSUSE offers it as one of its 2 primary options.

Ubuntu offers it in the form of the now-officially-sanctioned UGS remix.

Secondarily, it's widely hated, and personally, I can see why. It has
no familiar elements like a taskbar or app launch menus,  its windows
lack maximise/minimise buttons, its desktop is blank and empty and
unusable, it requires hardware 3D acceleration, it is big and
heavyweight.

I have used it. I can get by, but I agree with him. It's a mess.

Before you dismiss ROX, may I suggest that you read about it?

It /is/ an easy-to-use, friendly *desktop*, not a bare window manager.
It has desktop icons, drive icons, a very good graphical file browser
and a small selection of its own apps.  It is not minimalist.

ROX apps are directories containing a tree and all the files belonging
to that app in a self-contained bundle. (Just like in Gobo.)

It has its own easy-install mechanism, called 0launch, but that is secondary.

It's small, light, fast, mature, friendly, graphical ... and it's distinctive.

Gobo is a distro unlike anything else in the world. It is the only
Unix-like OS that gets rid of the Unix filesystem hierarchy.

I propose that Gobo should have an easy graphical desktop unlike
anything else, as well.

Otherwise, it will just look like various other distros. Using a
desktop that other distros already use hides Gobo's uniqueness, and
its uniqueness is its USP ("unique selling point").
