+1, Leandro. That seminal article validated all of Hisham's design
decisions for me. Also, for a recent convert to Linux, it was very
attractive to find a Linux distribution with a sane directory layout.
This was 2007. I just assumed Linux distributions would see the light and
convert to the Gobolinux layout. The fact that almost none have is a
testament to people's unwillingness to change. Apparently the perceived
benefit was too low and the risk too high.

To be clearer, I was recommending the filesystem hierarchy standard of
GOBOLINUX, not the FHS, which Hisham repudiated in that article. Liam's
points are spot on. I only mentioned the difficulty of filesystem design
because we were getting close to talking about inventing Yet Another
Filesystem. Maybe it was just me. Sorry.

If anything, this thread highlights a great strength of the Linux kernel:
the ability to bring together many different types of filesystems under one
root directory.
