Re: GoboLinux 015 not quite up to speed

One thing I noticed is that E18, in its semi-default settings as
shipped in Gobo015, eats up a lot of CPU. In particular, look at how
much CPU Terminology takes, and then turn cursor blinking off and see
the difference. It's startling; it's a shame I didn't catch that
before the release, but I didn't have much of a chance to run E18
myself. There must be other performance opportunities lurking there.
(And of course eating up CPU == eating up battery...)

My experience with E18 so far has been quite sub-optimal. It does do
some _beautiful_ visual stuff, but at the same time usability is far
behind more plain environments such as Xfce (which I've been using for
years, but haven't pushed for Gobo015 because it's been a while that
they don't make a new release.) The settings panels often look
incomplete (for example, I had to disable virtual desktops because I
couldn't find how to stop them switching when the mouse goes to the
edge of the screen). And I've seen it crash a couple of times already.

One thing related to speed is that I enabled OpenGL acceleration (at
one point when I was running it through a remote X session) and when I
rebooted back into a plain X session, all windows except for
Terminology are now black (ie, I can't access the settings again). I
went looking for the config files and they are all binary. The only
way I could get back to a useful graphical environment was nuking my
~/.e directory (losing all customizations I had made so far).

I will probably uninstall Enlightenment from my laptop soon, but I'll
keep using it for at least another week so I can report on any other
issues that come up.
