Ah, so the tricks we're using in the LiveCD are indeed outdated. But
there's a workaround which hopefully will work for you.
At some point during the boot process (near the end) you will read the
following message:

    "Starting X11 detection (<esc> to skip)"

Just press ESC at that point. Then, once you are in the command line, type
'startx' with fingers crossed.
