Sorry for not responding earlier, just didn't have the time...

The guess was amazingly right: The error message is about AS. (Can't tell
the stage, though... can I see it in a logfile? Which one?).

binutils is installed on my system, and I can run it from the command line
by just saying as.

"as" is in "binutils". And if this is Stage 0-1 it is s.th. in the host
system. This is why directly asked which package and stage the error
occurs.
