[rock-user] website: 1st pass done

Hi all

A first top to bottom prof reading of the web site was completed an hour 
or so ago, so should now be on the mirrors.  A lot of things were 
probably missed, so please mention any problems that may remain.

Please note, the rest of this email is in no way intended to beat up on 
anyone.

Some of the most common problems found over and over again:

Un-needed use of 'do' and friends:
	... do have ... -> has
	... do contain ... -> contains
and the like.

Mixing of sigular and plural in the same sentence:
	... that/it are ... or ... they is ... -> either:
			 'they are' or 'that/it is'


One very common practice on the site which is still there, is the use of 
first and second person refferences: I, me, you, and the like.
This is common and we all do it, but it is not the best.

Example, except for the above paragraph, note the complete lack of such 
references in this email. Now the same email with this, see what you think:

Hi all

I've just compleated a first pass for typos on the web site. I'm sure I 
must have missed a lot of things, so if you see any problems please let 
me know.

end of mock mail.

Which shounds better?
Does the last not sound possible a bit self centered?-)

OK, that is an exaggeration, but still.

It would be a huge job to restate every thing on the site to fix this, 
so it will stay. However, in the future could this be keep in mind and 
avoided?  If unsure how to say something in this way, please feel free 
to drop me and email for sugestions. As in this paragraph, a minimal 
amount of such usage is OK, even needed.

If it is desired, over time the most viewed pages could be reworked, 
either by the origanal author (much of the site needs updated anyway), 
or by an editor (such as myself !-)
