Hi all,

I just bought a new server for serving web
applications as apache, proftp, tomcat ....
Here, you can find description of this machine :

- motherboard TYAN s2468GN
- 2 x 512 PC2100/ddr226 Kingston memory module
- 2 x AMD Athlon MP 1800+
- Controller raid scsi ADAPTEC 5400s
- 4 x Hard Drive Cheetah 15k.3 18.4gb U320 Scsi-80
3.6ms 15k Rpm 3.5lp ( RAID-5 )
- DVD ide PIONEER

but I got lots of problems with this configuration.

I installed Mandrake 9.1. I first installed it with
Reiserfs ( for / ) but system always crashes and no
possibility to restart the system.

So I reinstalled completely the system ( always with
Mandrake 9.1 ) but with ext3 for the root filesystem
but I
always got many problems. I got many many problems
with aacraid ( aacraid hung , problems with inodes,
i/o errors and so on ).

So, I thought recompiling myself kernel 2.4.21-rc2
with aacraid and k7-smp but I can't do it because
system crashes during compilation.

So I finally downloaded this kernel
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/arklinux/apt/arklinux/dockyard/en/i586/RPMS.os/kernel-smp-2.4.21-0.rc1.4ark.athlon.rpm
and installation gone successful and restarting ok.
This is at the moment the most stable system I could
install on this machine
but my system crashes minimum 1 or 2 times a day.

- So, what can I do to resolve this very problematic
situation. Do I have to compile myself a kernel
2.4.21-rc2 ...
if yes , do I have to include APM and/or APIC and also
what is the most stable situation to compile it at
this moment
gcc 2.95.3 or gcc 3.2.2 ???

- Do I have to take another snapshot of kernel (
2.5.xx ), ... if yes do I have to take just aacraid or
the complete kernel ...

Thanks a lot for helping me to resolve this situation
... and if you can give me some advices for optimizing
my system ( filesystem and / or others .. )

Thanks a lot
vincent
