Stuart,

The real problem, I think , is not exactly and only
with Dell 2650 servers because I don't have one.

For remind my config is the following :

- motherboard TYAN s2468GN
- 2 x 512 PC2100/ddr226 Kingston memory module
- 2 x AMD Athlon MP 1800+
- Controller raid scsi ADAPTEC 5400s
- 4 x Hard Drive Cheetah 15k.3 18.4gb U320 Scsi-80
3.6ms 15k Rpm 3.5lp ( RAID-5 )
- DVD ide PIONEER

so I would correct what you say with this :

1. This is a common problem being experienced by
a lot of users running Linux, and
SMP (Intel/AMD) machines with a RAID SCSI Controller (
with chipset equivalent to this one on Adaptec 5400s -
so module aacraid )
2. No one knows what the cause is ...
3. No one has any idea how to solve it either.
( This is not exactly true. ) I received an answer
from alan saying this :

"As far as I can tell everyone in adaptec who knew
anything about this hardware and Linux was
'downsized'"

So our problem could well be resolved if Adaptec
suports correctly their products. I found this
behaviour very dramatic for a so well known company
with so expensive and high level products.

So as I said it in this list, I will try this weekend
( if I have time , not guaranteed !!! ) to install
FreeBSD and to analyze how this OS behaves with my
machine. I know well this is not a linux solution but
if it really not work with it, what can we do ???

Furthermore, I searched a general e-mail for Adaptec
company to ask their opinion about this mail but I
didn't find one.

So, maybe one day Adaptec will really supports linux
...
let's talk about this ...
vincent.
