I am having this same issue on a Dell 8450 running Gentoo Linux http://www.gentoo.org/ .
Had thought it was a hardware problem and swapped PERC2 and drives, with no improvement.
This is the last issue preventing me from putting the machine into production.

A quick rundown on the machine:
	- all host firmware up-to-date
	- 8 x P3-Xeon 700Mhz (2MB cache)
	- 4GB RAM
	- Dell PERC2 RAID w/(2) 36GB drives (as 2 volumes - no FT at present)

	/etc/fstab:
	/dev/sda1	/boot		ext2
	/dev/sda2	/		reiserfs
	/dev/sdb1	swap
	/dev/sdb2	/tmp		reiserfs

Like others have reported on this list, the problem occurs after 1-24 hours and seems to be associated with extended periods of intense activity on all CPU's (e.g. - 8 instances of 'setiathome -nice 19' or 'stress' with 8 cpu threads and 2 disk threads).

Have tried several kernels, including "vanilla" 2.4.20, 2.4.21, and various flavors of Gentoo-patched sources - the latest being "gs-sources" (patched 2.4.22_pre2). All kernels have been built and tested with both gcc-2.95.3 and gcc-3.2.3.

A couple of things that I consistently set in my kernel '.config' file:

CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y
CONFIG_MODULES is not set	(building a monolithic kernel)
CONFIG_MPENTIUMIII=y
CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y
CONFIG_HIGHIO=y
CONFIG_SMP=y

A couple of things that stand out from reading the previous postings -
- Disabling HT helps - possibly by reducing the apparent number of CPU's?
- High CPU load(s) seem to trigger the problem, perhaps co-incident with high disk-IO?

Also (Adaptec) does the version of the RAID controller firmware matter that much?

I would be *very* interested in trying out any patches for the 'aacraid' driver that the good folks from Adaptec would like others to try.

Thanks,
