I was out of town for the week and did not pursue my problem until now.
I think I know what the problem was:

dkms mkdriverdisk

creates a FAT disk image. I looked on the driver disk images on the 
install CD and they are ext2 format. So I created an ext2 formatted 
diskette and placed all the files from the original diskette on it.

The CD installer now recognizes the disk and loads the aacraid driver. 
So I completed the RedHat 7.3 installation.

However, thhe system in question now hangs on boot, just after loading 
the USB filesystem. I think the next step is checking the disks. Could 
this be a aacraid problem?
