Removal of ROMB card in Dell 1650 to prevent aacraid/kernel SCSI hangs

All,

Out of frustration and desperation to reach a stable operating platform 
of linux on a Dell 1650 server, I am considering removing the PERC3/Di 
ROMB card from 4 Dell 1650 units that constantly fail in production 
with the all too familiar "SCSI hang ?" message. No matter which kernel 
(2.2.25 / 2.4.21 / 2.4.23 + mark_s' new aacraid driver) and no matter 
which firmware (3153, 3170) the servers fail within the first few days 
of being in a production environment.

My question to the readers in this list is, has anyone taken the step 
of removing the ROMB card and just using the drives a plain old SCSI 
devices in the Dell 1650 machines? If so, how did you fare? My greatest 
concern is that once these ROMB cards are removed and the drives are 
used as plain old SCSI drives (NO RAID! NO PERC3!) that we'll find this 
'SCSI hang' problem manifests itself in the SCSI layer of the machines.

Someone tell me it isn't so?
