A thing or two that may add information to this problem: the kernel is 
2.4.20 (but on 2.4.23 made no difference whatsoever), I'm using uhci.o, 
and unplugging the device equals to a cold boot, for this purpose. I 
grabbed the CVS version I have a couple of weeks ago.
