The thing is I *am* running on FC3 at the moment. I installed FC3 from
downloaded CDs which gave me a 2.6.9-1.667 pre-built kernel. The very
first thing I did was install the at76c503-rfmd driver in order to get
Internet connectivity. It worked just fine (and that is how I am able to
send this email). With Internet ability I now set about updating my
system with all the latest available packages (some 307 if I remember
correctly!) amongst which was a package for the latest kernel
2.6.10-1.77_FC3. Once installed I booted into that new kernel (so at the
moment I have 2 kernels on my system) and tried to make the at76 module
which as I have stated no longer seems to work with this version of the
kernel.

I am about to dash out right now, but when I get back (it may have to be
tomorrow) I will have a poke around in the make menuconfig system to see
if I can spot anything obvious (but I have to say I am not very
confident in my ability to find anything unless there is a big flashing
red light with the words "this is your problem" on it...).

I suspect that there are a couple of possibilities here. Either 
a) the pre-built kernel configuration has changed between Fedora's
versions 2.6.9 and 2.6.10 or 
b) something else that I updated has upset things (I vaguely remember
there being a package called "wireless-tools" amongst the 307 or so
updates).

Of course it could be something else entirely.
