Thank you Nick! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't believe that I
didn't think of doing that. A simple "make clean" followed by "make &&
make install" was all that was needed. I'm afraid I had got so used to
just doing the "make && make install" + reboot thing after each new
kernel release (which had always worked with no problem) that it just
didn't occur to me to run "make clean" first. Sorry.

Well this message comes to you from my now-working-shiny-new 2.6.10
