linksys wusb11 version 2.8 on slackware

I am having problems using the latest cvs on slackware.  I have a linksys wusb11 v.2.8.  everything seems to go great and it shows wireless extensions on wlan0 and will pick up mac address of the router (confirmed by checking the bottom of router.  shows signal strength, but no link quality.  i have set mode to managed, no encryption set up, and have ran ifconfig wlan0 up.  I don't get an ip address unless I statically assign one.  in kde using the wireless utility i can use the statistics and see signal/noise and radio activity.  Does anyone have any ideas?
