I'm a debian user and when I compiled the driver ( a long time ago...) I remember needing the
kernel-sources package and a link somewhere in /lib/modules to the sources. I think the link was
somewhere hidden in the driver documentation, but I can't remember right now exactly where.

PS: unless your wife is editing the driver sources without you knowing I'd say keep it. And the
distro too :):)
