Actually, shared key authentication is used with WEP.

OK, "open system" authentication is used in both cases, so it's not an
issue.

Try turning off WEP.

See kernel messages using "dmesg".

Try other access points.

Use another card in monitor mode to intercept all wireless traffic.  See
which side is failing to respond properly.
