It's looking a bit better now...  I started the system yesterday p.m. (using 
the usb-uhci module), and no wlan0.  Rebooted immediately and wlan0 was up 
and configured (looked like no change from uhci).

This morning, however (machine off for 12hours) wlan0 was there from first 
boot!!! The difference?....  This time I had left my USB scanner plugged in.  
It shares an on-board hub with the wireless adaptor.  I'd unplugged it to try 
to reduce the load on my power supply.

I'm not sure this is an actual fix yet.... one success doesn't make it a rule, 
and there is a slight logical problem with the apparent solution.  But if I 
don't post against this thread again assume it is.
