AFAIK Alan Stern is currently looking into usb_reset_device of 2.6.x - his
changes will certainly break the current approach for this kernel version.
I hope to get nicer code common to 2.4 and >= 2.6.x as soon as he has
finished. So I'd like to postpone my activities until then.
