Well, it didn't crash my PC this time.  I also booted it from cold without the adaptor,
deleted the old modules and ran depmod -a before doing 'make install', but it still
didn't work.

I've enclosed an extract from /var/log/messages showing what happens immediately
after the adaptor is plugged in.
