OK, now you've got me worried  Maybe the other problems were related to the 
wlan adaptor after all.  Is there any way to tell the two versions apart? 

The output of /sbin/lsusb identifies the device as "0d5c:a002 Belkin F5D6050 
802.11b Adapter".  I bought the device about a year ago, and worked 
successfully with the sourceforge driver under RedHat 8, and both sourceforge 
and berlios drivers under SuSE 9.

Is the "not playing nice" related to AMD64, Kernel 2.6, or the berlios drivers 
(or some combination of all three).
