Airport iwconfig problem

I just installed an Apple Airport pcmcia card (not airport extreme) into my
G3 iBook. The card was autodetected by the Linux OS (Linux 2.4.22-2f kernel
-- Yellow Dog 3.0.1) at boot up as eth1. (eth0 is my normal ethernet card
which isn't plugged in to a network.)

I'm configuring the card to work with my work's wireless network. I setup my
airport card using:

/sbin/iwconfig eth1 essid "MyNetworkName" key s:networkpassword

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) : SET failed on device eth1 ;
Operation not supported.

/sbin/iwconfig eth1 essid "MyNetworkName" key "2342342AD3423DSD343AAEF"

Also results in the same error.

I know people have gotten airports to work. I curious to what I'm doing
wrong?

Thanks for any help or suggestions! =)
