Help with Netgear MA101 Rev B for linux Noob

Hi all.

I'm very new to linux and I'm having problems getting it to recognise my
wireless network card (usb)

I had a quick scan through the archives but didn't see the solution I
require.

I am following the tutorial at

to try and get my Netgear MA101 USB 802.11b network card to work.

My system is an athlon 800 running RedHat 9 and a very clean install.

All i have done since installing redhat (with mostly default choices) is
work this tutorial.

I am having some problems and given my lack of linux knowlege (i'm trying
to move from windows) I thought I'd post here for help.

after successfully compiling the driver (i had to add depmod to my path
first), I plugged the device into usb.

Step 5 of the tutorial is 'configuring the device'

under "Loading the driver," the tutorial states

At this point you should be able to just plug in your wireless device and
Linux should load the driver for it. However, to check that the module is
installed and does load, run:
      modprobe usbvnet (for Rev.A)
      modprobe usbvnetr (for Rev.B)
Then, if you don't get any errors, to check that it is loaded, run either
of:
      lsmod
      cat /proc/modules
You should see usbvnet or usbvnetr as well as uhci (you did read the
Important Issues and Requirements section didn't you).

typing modprobe usbvnetr  and pressing return gives me a new line with no
feedback (no errors or suchlike)

however I have problems at the next step.

I am asked to do the following

Plug in the MA101, and run:
      dmesg


You should see something like:
      hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 6
      usb.c: USB device 6 (vend/prod 0x864/0x4100) is not claimed by any
      active driver.
      usb.c: registered new driver usbvnet
      usb_vnet_probe: usb vendor/product=864/4100
      vnet_kernel.c: Reseting Usb Device

      vnet_kernel.c: Reset completed.
      Reg Domain
      usbvnet: driver version 1.0.1.101, compiled Dec 22 2002 09:55:44

It will list the interface alias for your device, e.g vnetusba.c: usb eth1
initialized and registered. This shows the alias is eth1. I have an
ethernet card as eth0.








after typing in dmesg  I do indeed get some text that looks like the above,
but not the same





I get


hub.c: new USB device  00:07.2-1, assigned address 2


usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x864/0x4102) is not claimed by any active
driver.


usb.c registered new driver usbvnetr





and then i get anew command prompt.





so.... I'm stumped.





I notice that the vendor / prod is 0x4102 and not 0x4100 as the tutorial
suggest.  Would this be my problem.
