Problem with SMC2632W V2 PCMCIA wireless card

Hi

I have been unable to get an SMC2632W V2 PCMCIA wireless card running. I
have tried a variety of versions of atmelwlandriver's including v2.1.1.
Linux kernel is 2.4.20 #10. System is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop.

I built all the PCMCIA drivers. "depmod -a" shows unresolved symobols for
pcmf502r.o, including kernel functions like printk. As suggested in one
email, I just ignored these.

"cardctl ident" shows
Socket 2:
  product info: "SMC", "2632W-V2"
  manfid: 0x01bf, 0xb301
  function: 6 (network)

This is the same manfid as shown in the table by J Hecker at 
http://www.wireless.org.au/~jhecker/atmeldrv/usbtable.html:

"SMC SMC 2632W V3.0 - 0x01bf 0x0b301 AT76C502A - No Yes No yes"

That list doesn't show an FCC code or the wireless chip, and has a 
different version number. The FCC on my card is HEDACC2632WV2. FCC data is at 
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/oet/forms/reports/Search_Form.hts?form=Generic_Search&fetchfrom=0&mode=edit&show_records=10&grantee_code=HED&product_code=ACC2632WV2
and the internal photo shows the text "PCMCIA AMTEL+RFMD Board WN3301H 
ROB".

I added the entry "alias eth2 pcmf502r" to /etc/modules.conf. Running 
'/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart' gives the error messages

Bringing up interface eth2:  Error for wireless request "Set Encode" 
(8B2A) :
    SET failed on device eth2 ; No such device.
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
    SET failed on device eth2 ; No such device.
SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device
Failed to bring up eth2.

but the pcmf502r driver is loaded. ifconfig and iwconfig have "no such 
device"

Any clues about what to do next to get this working?
