The printer printed out the alignment page when I set it up and it printed out 
a report I set up through the controls on the system, so I know the printer 
itself works.  Could it be a problem with a faulty printer -- at least in the 
communications part?  Does the fact that "ptal-connect -service echo" doesn't 
work (neither does ptal-print) indicate anything about faulty communications?

I've changed the loglevel in Cups to debug.  It looks like Cups uses 
ptal-print to talk to the printer (at least at one point).  Is this the 
actual print command?  It seems to me I could cut out extra factors if I knew 
the actual commands CUPS uses to send a command to the printer and knew what 
to make of the returned errors.
