The line "hpaio" was in the dll.conf file, but it was right after a line 
"hpoj"   I commented the "hpoj" out and now can scan.

Another Success!

Still can't print from gimp.  In gimp, the printer setup lists a bunch of hp 
deskjet, hp designjet, and hp laserjet models, but no hp psc models.  One 
other choice is postscript level 1 and level 2, but nothing I have tried 
makes the printer move at all.
