Failing to negotiate a connection

I have a problem with two Conexant modems communicating together.

Modem 1 is in my Linux box here and modem 2 is installed in an identical 
machine on a remote site.

Both systems are SuSE Linux 9.1 with all current updates applied.

I have downloaded and installed the most recent drivers according to the auto 
install script.

The box here can dial the internet and connect successfully and operates fine.

The box on the remote site can do likewise and wvdial reports a connection 
speed of 57600 from the modem. The connection is stable and fast.

When I attempt to connect to the remote site from this box by direct dial up 
the two modems never manage to negotiate a connection at all.

When I try to connect to the remote site using a Windoze laptop (Toshiba) with 
built in modem I can establish a connection but it is unreliable and very 
slow.

I have consulted with the Telecoms providers and they assure me there is no 
problem with the lines (do I believe them ????).

Is there an init string for either end that will help me?
