I have roughly the same effect on a laptop. On my machine
the number of errors is on magnitude larger if I use the
8139too module. 

There are only errors on receive, no errors on sending
data away.

I have also lot's of "kernel: eth0: too much work on 
interrupt" messages in /var/log/messages
