It must be an ADMtek part, not a Realtek part.

The AN983 is a Comet/Centaur chip.  It's likely that you need the
original driver from Scyld, as the modified driver in most kernel
versions does not correctly work with the Comet.

You can't: the driver source works with all stable kernels since 2.0,
but the binary depends on many things in your specific kernel
configuration.  Your vendor should either provide working, pre-compiled
drivers or an installation capable of compiling them.
