The modified driver distributed with the kernel is broken, and has been
broken for a long time.  You'll need to use the driver from scyld.com as
a module:

mkdir /tmp/netdrivers/
cd /tmp/netdrivers/
ncftp ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdrivers.tgz
tar xfvz netdrivers.tgz
make
make install
